Treating Trauma & PTSD in Charlotte NC
Trauma and PTSD can make living life difficult. Trauma won’t disappear on its own, but working with a licensed therapist can help. At Charlotte Therapy Center, we’ll work one on one with you to figure out a plan that is best suited for your needs.
What is Trauma & PTSD?
Trauma is the lasting mental result of any distressing or disturbing event. These traumatic events can include physical, sexual, emotional, or verbal abuse, but trauma can stem from much more than abuse. Trauma can stem from a variety of incidents, including serious accidents, death of a loved one, abandonment, combat, betrayal, miscarriages, and more.
Post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, is a disorder that stems from a traumatic event. Traumatic events typically trigger fear or a “fight or flight” response meant to keep someone from harm. Most trauma victims experience this during or following trauma. People suffering from PTSD will continue to experience these issues for a prolonged period of time following a traumatic event. People who have PTSD may feel trapped, stressed, or afraid, even when they are not in a dangerous situation.
Symptoms of trauma
PTSD can result from a traumatic event or series of events in one’s life, but it is important to note that not all who have experienced trauma will go on to experience PTSD or PTSD-like symptoms. Trauma alone can have an impact on one’s physical and emotional health and wellbeing. Symptoms of trauma may include:
Fatigue
Shock, denial, or disbelief
Anxiety and fear
Anger, irritability, mood swings
Guilt, shame, self-blame
Difficulty concentrating
Racing heartbeat
Muscle tension
The most common symptoms of PTSD include:
Flashbacks—reliving the trauma over and over, including physical symptoms like a racing heart or sweating
Bad dreams
Frightening thoughts
Why go to therapy for trauma?
Trauma can have an overwhelming impact on day to day life and the lasting effects do not typically go away with time. Trauma left untreated can have an impact on one’s relationships, work, and other areas of your life. When left unchecked, trauma and PTSD can lead to unsafe coping mechanisms or other ongoing problems such as panic attacks, depression, substance abuse, and/or suicidal thoughts or ideation.
Speaking with a licensed therapist can help by learning to work with trauma, develop new and healthy coping mechanisms, and more. When speaking with a professional, they can help separate your trauma from its side effects, like negative thoughts about yourself, fears, and more.
